Novak Djokovic, the New ATP World No. 1

"Today wasn't possible," Nadal said. "I tried my best, as always. Today, one player played better than me. I will try another time, next year."
And as the new ATP rankings come out, let us remember that these are just numbers. Rafa has gone as low as No 3 before but was able to overcome and get World No 1 rank again. I think what he needs to do is to think of ways to face and tackle his new rival Djokovic. He is still young and can still go along way but for now he needs to rest and take care of his injuries. I have said in my blog before that the illness in Doha seems to have affected him and his games then the foot injury. He is not 100% whole or maybe I am expecting too much from him or expect everything to be the same as his games in 2010.
He has reached a pinnacle that hasn't been climbed often, he is a player who has just about everything - the love and support of a good family and team, a beautiful girlfriend and a steady relationship, wealth, fame or rock star status, an outstanding tennis career, the support of sponsors and continuous sports gear endorsements, and the warm support of a huge fan base. What else can a man ask for? He has done it, he has made it to the top, he can continue to do so, but we know that Rafa is one who wouldn't rest on his laurels. And he will be back better than before.

Rafa Improving Play at Roland Garros 2011
Some tennis experts are saying that its going to be Federer and Djokovic on the finals...semi-finals may be but it's too soon to say that it's going to be them at the last match. Even Rafa is saying he has been playing better.Am scared though because Soderling, whom he plays against today, is one of the best players on red clay and the only man to beat him at Roland Garros. But if Rafa wins over 5th seeded Soderling then he only has to worry about Murray. Rafa definitely looks better unlike the matches before when his sports apparel was super wet with sweat, like he wasn't used to playing and tired easily. Soderling is much more dangerous on the red clay, but then so is Nadal. And so where this one promises to be a real nail-biter, Nadal is expected to reign supreme and in four gruelling sets to book his last four berth. I truly hope what tennis experts are saying are true.
The funny thing is Rafa has been hearing a lot of criticisms from people and he has pointed this out:
I play six finals in a row this year. I am having a very good year. One player is doing better than me. That’s all. But I’m in good position to finish the year in a very high position of the ranking.
I guess fans and people around him has set the standards so high for him that even when he is playing well, though not at par with his playing before, he gets criticized.
Those who know better still believe he is World No 1. Here is what Soderling has to say regarding Rafa:
"No, seriously, he's a great player, I think everybody knows what he can do. He won here so many times."
Both players possess destructive weapons and great playing prowess which they can deploy against each other. And though Soderling is an erratic player who can floor any player on his day and Nadal may not be playing at his best (that is compared to last year) but he is definitely improving with every match and is still the favorite to emerge victorious from the clash.
Djokovic on the other hand has more free time and more reason to smile since Fabio Fognini of Italy withdrew with a torn left thigh muscle giving him ample time to rest.
As a Rafa fan, Djokovic may be hungry for this win but Rafa is certainly doing everything to hold on to the title. And I am personally keeping all my fingers crossed that he does.

Rafa Wins the 2010 US Open

one of only 3 tennis greats (Steffi Graff and Andre Agassi) to capture the career Golden Slam, which is the 4 majors plus an Olympic Gold. Another thing he has accomplished at only 24 is become the seventh man to complete the career Grand Slam and the youngest at that to accomplish the deed in the Open Era. He follows Rod Laver, Pete Smapras and Roger Federer as the fourth tennis champion to win three consecutive Grand Slam championships in the Open Era. He is only the only other player other than Rod Laver who has won in Paris, London and New York in one season. There have been major and high-achievement tennis players like Bjorn Borg who never achieved Career Grand Slam either because they did not have a long career or in the case of Borg particular tournaments were ill-suited to their games. Borg has never won the Australian Open and the US Open which is both played on hard courts. While some players don’t win the French Open which is played on clay or the Wimbledon which is played on grass. Rafael Nadal on the other hand has been victorious in all of these tournaments which have a variety of surfaces. What I believe is the greatest difference is that Rafa is only 24 and he has a long way more to go. Federer is still the greatest tennis player but he has reached his peak while Rafael is getting better every game, and even his opponent Novak Djokovic noted that he was more in awe of Nadals win because Federer was playing as one of the best players in the world but Rafa, Djokovic added:
“who is just proving each day, each year that he's getting better. That's what's so frustrating. He's getting better each time you play him. He's so mentally strong and dedicated to this sport. He has all the capabilities, everything he needs, in order to be the biggest ever, in my opinion. He has lots to come if he physically holds in the next five, six, seven years.”

When he wins the Australian Open, not if but when, then everybody can say he is without equal. But according to his uncle Toni who has been mentoring and coaching Rafa, he does not believe that his nephew is already the greatest player. According to Uncle Ton:
“The best players were Federer, Laver, Borg - Rafael is far away from them, although he is a very good player.”When asked if his nephew is the greatest player his answer was to ask him 5 or 6 years from now.
