Raul and the 2012 Football Against Hunger Campaign

It has been quite awhile since I have updated my blog. But this is one issue that I know needs to be posted.

Friends know how much I adore Raul Gonzales Blanco that I even learned to follow and love FC Schalke04 despite my being a Madridista.

Since his transfer to the Royal Blues, which I blogged about in Raul Says Adios to Real Madrid he has managed to work well with the Blues and continues to contribute goals to the team, and very recently even won 2011 Goal of the Year in Bundesliga. In many of Schalke’s matches, one can see how easily he has been accepted and how great the respect his team has for him, and most importantly how truly well-loved he is by the fans. He has even earned the moniker Señor Raul from fans and he himself is amazed with the acceptance, support, affection and respect that has been given to him by the Germans.

In fact, he said in an interview that people would come up the street to him and thank him for coming to Germany and he is grateful for that. We all know that leaving Real Madrid was not easy for him after having spent half of his life with them. But FC Schalke 04 and the fans I guess know how lucky they are to have him, and continue to show Raul this. He is amazed by the support and respect fans for him. Unlike other soccer players Raul has remained grounded, a true gentleman on and off the field. Up until now, he is one veteran who has played professionally for 19 years and still has not received a red card. One can only respect such an icon and thus the issue of hunger and the campaign against it spearheaded by Raul should more or less get the attention it needs and deserves.

In 2004, he was appointed FAO Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations and since then has been active in the campaigns. This year, the European Commission together with FAO and the European Professional Football Leagues has a campaign against hunger and poverty. It aims to raise awareness of the plight of hunger and the efforts to solve it. The focus of this year’s campaign is on the Sahel region in Africa.

The symbolic launch of the campaign took place today at Brussels where Raul as FAO Goodwill Ambassador and as part of the EPFL. It is expected that players from top football clubs including Real Madrid, Schalke, Manchester Utd, AC Milan, Barcelona and others will wear “Sahel Emergency” T-shirts ahead of their matches 31 March - 1 April 2012 to alert millions of fans in stadiums and on television about the life-threatening situation in Africa.

We will focus the campaign on the Sahel region in Africa. I told Raúl about my recent trip to Niger and Chad, where 300,000 kids die from hunger-related diseases each year. Hunger will kill even more children in 2012 as a new food crisis looms. This is why we are acting now to prevent a bigger disaster. In this effort, the help of ambassadors like Raúl, like Hristo Stoichkov, like Roberto Baggio, is indispensable.
Why? Because in the fight against hunger, humanity must win. And who would be better to help us win this fight than the people who live day after day, week after week, winning in football? Raúl has just scored his 400th goal in professional football, so we clearly have a winner on our side. But equally importantly, he is also a fair player, who has never been penalised with a red card in his entire career!
When it comes down to hunger, the world still falls 945 million people short of fair play – this is how many today will go to bed hungry. Sadly, over the last years their numbers have been going up. Raúl and our other ambassadors can help to raise attention to hunger, so we change the game and win the fight against it.

2011 Golden Foot Nominees

The Golden Foot award is an international award given to active football players of at least 29 years of age, who stands out for their athletic achievements (both as individuals and team players) and for their personality. This award can only be won once.

The international prize is given every year to the game’s greatest in the Principality of Monaco under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and promoted by World Champions Club and the Tourism Office of Monaco.
Ten nominees are chosen by a panel of international journalists based on the criteria that they are at least 29 years of age and still playing. The 10 names this year have been chosen by the Golden Foot jury, composed of 58 journalists representing sports media all over the world.
In a ceremony headlined by last year's winner Francesco Totti, the AS Roma captain, the following candidates were announced as nominees for the 2011 Golden Foot:
David Beckham (LA Galaxy, England)
Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus, Italy)
Iker Casillas (Real Madrid, Spain)
Didier Drogba (Chelsea, Ivory Coast)
Samuel Eto'o (Inter Milan, Cameroon)
Ryan Giggs (Manchester United, Wales)
Carles Puyol (Barcelona, Spain)
Raúl González Blanco (Real Madrid, Spain)
Xavi Hernández (Barcelona, Spain)
Javier Zanetti (Inter Milan, Argentina).
Winner is selected by an online poll at goldenfoot.com where anyone can vote. Football fans have the chance to vote for the player they deem is worthy of the award until October 7. The award ceremony will be hosted on October 10 in Monte Carlo.
I, of course, have casted my vote already for my favorite Raul Gonzalez Blanco. He has been a nomine several times already but the nearest he got for the award was in 2009 where he was in 2nd place to winner Ronaldinho. My voting for Raul is not simply a matter of favorites but at age 34 (he turns 34 today June 27, 2011) he is something else to behold. After 16 years playing loyally for Real Madrid, he left the whites to wear the Schalke 04 team wear and gave it his all.
For me he has always been playing good but I guess Real Madrid’s coaches and managers no longer saw his value after getting the much-expensive young players. Though the new Real Madrid coach Mourinho wanted him to continue with the team but Raul no longer wanted to spend another season being the 3rd or 4th choice striker when he knew he can still deliver a good performance in another place. The world saw a recharged Raul when he played with Schalke 04 and the Germans fell in love with El Angel del Madrid. He has always been a favorite with fans and that certainly continued in Germany and more so when on May 21, 2011, his first year with the Royal Blues, they were able to lift the DFB Cup when they won over MSV Duisburg in Berlin. That is the reason why I think he deserves the 2011 Golden Foot award.

PS. Happy 34th birthday, Raul!

Finally, Real Madrid Wins Copa del Rey Cup

After 18 years, Real Madrid wins the Copa del Rey cup again. It has been a long drought for the Madridistas but the win makes everything worthwhile.

When Real Madrid finally won the cup I had mixed emotions…I was happy that they won the cup again after almost 18 years, the last time being that of 1993. At the same time a little sad because my idol Raul was not part of the win. When he said goodbye to Real Madrid which I wrote about in my post Raul says Adios to Real Madrid, he was considered finish and he wanted to show he wasn’t ready to retire yet and so he changed his sportswear from whites to blues but knowing the fact that he is forever etched in Madridismo he is certainly happy for this win.

Typically it is Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo who has been the focus of headlines; it was his goal in the extra that has made the score. But let us not forget that it was goalkeeper and the Los Blancos captain Iker Casillas’ saves and outstanding stops that made sure the Barca’s assault did not score. He should be the one receiving the praise for his exceptional saves in the last 15 minutes that denied Barcelona a goal.
First, Spain's World Cup-winning goalkeeper flung himself low to his right to block a fierce shot by Lionel Messi.
Casillas then launched himself high to his left to tip away a shot by winger Pedro.
Finally, the man who is widely regarded as the best in the world at his profession threw himself down and to his left to turn away Andres Iniesta's goal-bound shot with a fingertip save.
And Iker did it all in a space of a 15-minute vigorous attack from superb players who more often than not score a goal. The decisive goal of Ronaldo came on a swift counterattack from a ball that was passed from Marcelo to Angel di Maria that was met by Ronaldo who arched backward and then flung himself forward to power the ball into the corner of the net. And Barca’s goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto was powerless to stop that.

And Madridistas all over the world rejoiced with the win. Celebration was held at the Cibeles plaza where the wins are always celebrated, Iker Casillas then wrapped the flag on the Cibeles statue and gave her a kiss amdist the We Are the Champions and chants from the thousands celebrating the cup. Though there is a funny addendum to the history because after waiting for 18 years to get the cup, Sergio Ramos dropped it and the bus taking the team to Cibeles run over it. Good thing thought that the makers always have a duplicate.

Ballon d'Or 2010: Lionel Messi Wins Prize For World's Best Player

In November of last year, I blogged about the Ballon d’Or or the Golden Ball when FIFA made the shortlist of nominations available. And though I wasn’t able to list down the 3 players nominated: Xavi, Messi and Iniesta all of FC Barcelona, here is the latest on the Ballon d’ Or.
Lionel Messi wins for 2nd time in a row. He was the Ballon d’Or winner and the FIFA World Player of the Year last year when these awards were given separately, and he is again today. And as usual, the decision was controversial. First, footballers and fans alike were surprised when Wesley Sneijder was snubbed as a finalist, then Messi won again when he was in fact mediocre during the World Cup. According to the panel of judges, they chose Messi because of his astounding club form. Messi has spent the year scoring a goal per game and in the cases where he didn’t score he was able to provide or assist for the strikes.
On the other hand, the Spaniards have been really hoping either Xavi or Iniesta would win the Ballon d’Or for Spain, especially since they won the World Cup. In fact, this is the only award that any Spanish player has not received, even Raul has not received this Golden Ball despite the fact that Real Madrid has won the Champions League 9 times because of his efforts. But if you listen to Xavi speak about it the winner is actually FC Barcelona because all three finalists wear the same sportswear uniform. As Xavi himself said, the the FIFA Ballon d'Or is a triumph for the philosophy of Barcelona. He says the nomination of three Blaugrana players as finalists for the 2010 Ballon d'Or is a moment to savour. It is a testament of the Blaugrana’s philosophy that helped their football club have three finalist in the 2010 Ballon d’Or.
Let’s just hope that things might change with Real Madrid especially since Mourinho also won as Men’s Coach of the Year. If that award is really given to a deservicg player and coach, there is still hope for Real Madrid this year.

Update Plus Sporting Gijon Vs Real Madrid Goal

Been busy at work so I really did not have the time to update...so many changes, too little time.

After witnessing Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao's win over Antonio Margarito I knew I had to write something, even if it's just to congratulate the greatest boxer who ever walk on earth...but then I realized that I also had a lot of updating to do.

I blogged about Laker's winning but wasn't able to write about their loss on their Thursday game with Denver Nuggets or the Sunday game with the Suns.

Real Madrid won over Sporting Gijon.

Did I blog about the Giants winning? Missed out on many important details. Give me sometime I will put more details.

For now let me just share this with you:
